What can I expect from a chiropractic visit?New patient consultation Before your initial consultation you will have already completed an online questionnaire (sent to you by email), which will give a detailed case history and give me a good idea of what has prompted you to seek treatment. At the start of your appointment I will usually ask a few more questions to obtain any further details where necessary. I will then do a physical assessment which involves a blood pressure check, gentle range of motion testing and, if needed, some orthopaedic and neurological tests. As long as there is nothing throughout this process that suggests it is not safe to treat you, which is uncommon, but something that must always be considered, there is time to have a treatment if you are happy to receive one. We will discuss how many sessions are likely required to resolve the presenting issue before your treatment commences.

What can I expect from a treatment?Treatment You will be asked to lie on the treatment couch, where I will assess your joints, including your spine and pelvis, and use light gentle adjustments, which are specific to the McTimoney technique, to mobilise and correct any imbalances in your skeletal framework. McTimoney Chiropractic does not aim to 'crack' or 'pop' the joints in the way that some other treatment modalities do. Some people prefer the McTimoney technique for this reason as they feel it is a more comfortable experience for them. I will often use soft tissue massage techniques and medical acupuncture alongside chiropractic adjustments where I feel this will benefit you and where you are happy to receive them. Click here to visit the website of the McTimoney Chiropractic Association (MCA) for more information about the technique. Chiropractic for People (mca-chiropractic.org)

How many treatments will I need? The number and frequency of treatments depends on factors such as: How long have you had the problem? The longer the problem has been present the longer it takes to resolve, generally. Recent injuries tend to resolve more quickly. How fit and well are you? On the most part, the healthier you are in general the quicker your body heals itself. We will help you with lifestyle advice and discuss ways to get you feeling better quicker. What sort of problem is it? It depends on the complexity of the issue. For example, straight forward low back pain will likely resolve quicker than acute sciatica. Are you under a lot of stress? Periods of high stress can not only contribute to physical pain but can also slow down the rate of recovery. Most people find between two and six sessions sufficient to address a straightforward problem. The number of treatments, and frequency will be discussed at the initial consultation before you commence treatment, but please feel free to ask us what you can expect when you contact us.
